To the Overwhelmed Person:
There are many reasons you may feel overwhelmed. Maybe you are like me and you’re in a new season of life where you are trying to learn a lot of new things at once (for me, that season is motherhood). Maybe you are being hit with one challenge after another and it’s all you can do to keep your head above the water, or maybe the economy has you falling beneath the weight of financial burdens.
It doesn’t matter why you’re feeling overwhelmed, one thing is for sure. The Bible has a lot to say about feeling overwhelmed and there are plenty of verses that can give us hope and peace amid our overwhelming feelings.
Below you’ll find just a few of my favorite verses to cling to when I am feeling overwhelmed in life. Some bring hope, some bring comfort, and some simply remind me that God is in control no matter what. Be sure to let me know which one is your go-to verse when you’re feeling overwhelmed and if you have one that didn’t make the list, make sure you share it in a comment below!
Bible Verses About What to Do and Where to Focus When Feeling Overwhelmed
Run to Jesus because his name is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe (Proverbs 18:10).
Do not worry about tomorrow because tomorrow can take care of itself (Matthew 6:34).
Watch in hope for the Lord knowing that he will hear you. He will be your light and will give you the victory (see Micah 7:7-8).
Choose the “better part”. Choose to focus on Jesus and rest in him as opposed to worrying over “many things” (see Luke 10:41-42). When you keep your eyes on Jesus, he will keep you in perfect peace (see Isaiah 26:3).
Do not be anxious for anything but pray about everything (see Philippians 4:6).
Do not let your heart be troubled (see John 14:1)
Trust in Jesus and be blessed (see Jeremiah 17:7)
Seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness and everything else will fall into place (see Matthew 6:33).
Be content with what you have (see Hebrews 13:5)
Bible Verses for When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed from the Psalms
Where does our help come from? It comes from God the maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2).
When we grow weary, it is God who watches over our way (Psalm 142:3)
Sometimes when we are feeling overwhelmed, we just want to run away. Even King David said that he wished he had wings like a dove so that he could fly away and rest (see Psalm 55:6)
King David prayed and said that “from the ends of the earth” he would cry to God. He prayed and said “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (see Psalm 46:1). When we are overwhelmed, this should be our prayer too: God lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 34:19-The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers them from them all.
When you are feeling burdened and overwhelmed in life, cast your burden on the Lord and he will help carry you through he will never let you be left alone (see Psalm 55:22).
Psalm 42:5 “Why so downcast oh my soul, why so disturbed within me, put your hope in God”.
The Bible says “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy” (Psalm 94:19). No matter what we are facing in life, God can give us joy and peace that no one or nothing else can bring.
Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear for I am with you; do not be afraid for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will hold you up with my righteous right hand” (NIV).
Bible Verses About Strength in Overwhelming Times
Isaiah 40:31 “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (NIV).
2 Corinthians 12:10 “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (NIV).
1 Peter 5:1 “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (NIV).
Habbakuk 3:19 “The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights” (NIV).
Bible Verses About Rest For When You’re Overwhelmed
One of my favorite Bible verses is Matthew 11:28-30. Such a favorite of mine, I decided to do an in-depth study on Matthew 11:28 which I hope that you will read. Anyway, it says
Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”
(Matthew 11:28-30 Bible, Revised Standard Version).
Exodus 33:14-The Lord replied, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest”.
Conclusion
Dear one, I pray that if you are feeling overwhelmed, these words will bring you joy, strength, comfort, and rest. Remember, in this world you will have trouble, but God has overcome the world and greater is he that’s in you than he that’s in this world (see John 16:33 and 1 John 4:4-6).
