How to Choose a Word of the Year in 4 Easy Steps

Ahh (this may be a slight sigh of relief). Christmas has come and gone and we are now eagerly awaiting the new year. This can be a time of trepidation or a time of empowerment; you choose which.

One of the things that empowers me the most throughout the new year is to choose a “word of the year” and so I want to show you how to choose a word of the year, too. The word that I choose helps me to remain focused, dedicated, and committed. It helps me to complete specific goals that I have set out to accomplish. The word that I have chosen this year is “perseverance” and my verse is Hebrews 12:1.

I have chosen this word because too many times during a year, I find it easy to lose motivation. Because of that, I let goals that I have created just fall by the wayside (anyone else?). This year, I have chosen to recite this verse every time that I am tempted to quit and commit again to keep going! I will purpose in my heart to complete my tasks. Do you have a verse of the year yet? If not, read on to discover how to choose a word of the year in 5 easy steps.

How to Choose a Word of the Year

  1. Take Time to Reflect

What are some things that you wanted to accomplish this year but didn’t? What are some things you wish you could do differently? Think about the past year and your goals for this year and use it as inspiration for choosing your word.

2. Read the Word of God (The Bible)

Coming up with a word for the year can seem difficult at times but we have a Bible full of words straight from the author of life. Take a moment to read the Bible and see if any theme or word jumps out at you. Make a list of any and all themes or words that draw your attention. If you’d like, you can look at inspirational quotes on Pinterest and see if any thing compliments the word(s)/theme(s) that you have chosen.

3. Narrow it Down

Now that you have a list of themes, words, and or quotes it is time to narrow it down. Look back at your goals for the new year and the direction you want to be heading in the year ahead. Which words mean the most to you? Choose your top 3-5.

4. Pray About It

God says to make our requests known to him. Now is a good opportunity to pray about the year ahead and all that it may have in store. Ask him to give you a Rhema word (spoken word that applies to you individually). God can help you choose a word if you will only ask. I am sure that the Lord would love to help you with that! You are after all, his child!

Now That You Have a Word

Now that you have your Rhema word, your word of the year, it is time to put it into action. Write your word down. You can write your word on a sheet of notebook paper, in a planner, or on a sticky note. I like to place mine on my mirror and my laptop (I often wane on blogging goals the most *sigh*). It’s great to see the word that you have chosen for the new year often so that it can serve as a way to encourage you.

I pray that as this new year begins and you cling to your word, the Lord will uplift, encourage, and uphold you. I also pray that he gives you a supernatural peace so that you can face the year with a joy and not anxiety. God bless you and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  1. Hi Miranda, thanks for the interesting article. My word of the year is HOPE! With that said, I hope and pray that all goes well this year and it is a better year than last two.
