My goodness, it is hard to believe the Christmas season is upon us (and Christmas is almost here!). There is one thing that my family and I do every Christmas. I feel that it is one Christmas tradition that every family needs to have. Are you looking for a Christmas tradition that will inspire you, help you to grow closer to others, and something you can pass down through generations? This must-have Christmas tradition is the one for you.
The Must-Do Christmas Tradition
Every year on Christmas day, we will have a nice breakfast together as a family. After this, we will proceed to the living room where we all gather together around the Christmas tree. My Dad will usually sit in a chair and will then read Luke’s account of the Christmas story. This has become a tradition in our family and one that we do not take lightly. The reading of the Christmas story before gifts are opened, helps to remind us of what Christmas is really about. Reading the Christmas story helps to inspire us to be thankful for the greatest gift ever given (Jesus Christ). It helps us to grow closer to each other as a family. Reading the Christmas story from the Bible is a tradition that can be continued for years to come.
The Importance of a Christ-Centered Christmas
Far too many times, Christmas becomes commercialized and we lose site of what this holiday season is really about. I have seen clients so concerned about their children not having the latest gifts, they were willing to take out a loan. These same parents, are not religious and so they fail to teach their children of the gift of Jesus.
Keeping Christ as the center of Christmas helps one to refocus their attention on the things that are the most important, prevents disappointment in young children, and creates a close bond between family and friends (you learn how to love others by loving Jesus first). When we focus on who Christ is and why we celebrate his birth, everything else seems to be trivial and pale in comparison. Focusing on Christ alone, can give you a supernatural peace that many seem to lose this time of year.
How to Incorporate a Christ-Centered Christmas Tradition
Just because my family and I read the Christmas story before we open gifts does not mean you have to do the same. Maybe you want to read the Christmas story after gifts, before bed, or any time in between. It doesn’t matter when you read the story, what matters is that you take the time to read the words of Christ and know that he is the reason for the season and the one we should celebrate not just at Christmas, but all year long. Make reading the Bible a tradition in your family and make it unique to you.
