How to Set Biblical Goals in 4 Easy Steps

Why is Biblical Goal Setting Important?

Jesus himself knew the importance of biblical goal setting and he knew that as humans, we like to set goals. In Luke 14:28 it says “suppose you want to build a tower, won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough to complete it?” (Source). Biblical goal setting is important because a well made plan will lead to success whereas lack of planning can lead to failure (see Proverbs 21:5).

How to Set Biblical Goals

  • Make a plan

This probably goes without saying but if you are going to set some biblical goals, you need to have a plan in place. Noble people make plans and stand by their deeds (Isaiah 32:8). If you don’t have a vision (plan) then it will be difficult for you to follow up on your ideas (see Proverbs 29:18). Once you have a plan in place, don’t forget to write it down (see Habakkuk 2:2).

  • Be Persistent

As you are setting goals, make sure that you are able to remain persistent with them. Daniel is one of my favorite examples of persistence. He determined what he was going to do, and he did it no matter what. One of my goals for 2020 is to write more consistently on my blog. I am sure there will times when I will not feel like writing but I will need to be persistent in order to succeed. If you need some encouragement to remain persistent, be sure to read Philippians 3:13-14, Hebrews 10:35-36, and Hebrews 12:1-2a.

2 More Ways to Set Biblical Goals

  • Be Flexible

So you’ve made a plan, you’ve wrote it out, you are persistent. All of these things are great! That being said, just because you made a plan and are persistent with it, does not mean it will happen. We do not know what tomorrow holds, so we should always be flexible and follow the Lord’s will (see James 4:13-14).

  • Follow the Lord

Unless you allow the Lord to work with you, all your work will be in vain. If you commit to the Lord whatever you do, he will secure your plans (Psalm 127:1). If you acknowledge the Lord and commit your work to him, he will make your paths straight and your plans secure (see Proverbs 3:6 and Proverbs 16:3). You will be blessed when you trust in God (Jeremiah 17:7). Ultimately, God’s purpose is what is going to prevail in the end (Proverbs 19:21).

Conclusion

4 Ways to Set Goals Biblically

So to recap, if you want to set biblical goals, you need to make a plan and write it down, be persistent in working toward your goals, be flexible knowing plans can always change, and follow the Lord because in the end, his plan is going to prevail.
